I spotted this toy duck sitting in a window sill in a common area in one of the wards when I took the official historic tour on the night before the shoot.

It serves as reminder that children were sent to asylums, both because they were accompanying their committed mothers and because they may have been committed themselves. It wasn't uncommon to see children sent to the asylum for reasons such as unwanted pregnancy, disobedience or illnesses like epilepsy, Down's Syndrome or autism. Adolescent anxiety interpreted as "mania" was also a common reason for a child to be sent an asylum.
